Time to breathe deeply. The zoo, a green alternative…
In 1950, the first zoo in Dhaka, near the Supreme Court, opened with ax-deers, monkeys and elephants. In 1961, a zoo administration with a board was founded. After the inheritance of other animals from home and abroad, the zoo was inaugurated on June 23, 1974 at its present location in Mirpur on 75 hectare and is operated by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. It is the largest zoo in Bangladesh and was known for years for its poor housing conditions and the corruption of its officials. After several animals died in 2009, the zoo’s management was suspended and a new committee formed. It may be that everything is not all right today, but much has changed since then for the better.
In addition to generous park and lake landscapes, the zoo now houses about 3,000 animals from over 200 species. Although you cannot see any animals in captivity, the zoo is still suitable as a park and offers space with its generous green and water areas for recreation. At the weekend, of course, the zoo is frequented accordingly. Selfie alert! On average, the zoo visits 12-13,000 people every day.
