A tourist terra incognita. Lars and Louis Isadore Kahn.
Granted, the interest in country and people has led us not really to Bangladesh, but the enthusiasm for the American architect Louis Kahn, who’s probably the best and most important building, the National Parliament of Bangladesh (Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban), in Dhaka is located and it’s worth as one of the biggest parliament buildings of the world... Opposed to the Lonely Planet guide book, which supposes it will be attractive just for “follower of grimly architecture of the seventies” we can recommend a tour of the building to every architecture enthusiast.
Our ambitious expectations of the architecture were completely fulfilled! For us it was very practical that you have looked for the application of the approval and care on site. During a scarcely three-hour-long walk we could see almost all important areas of the building, including mosque and parliament hall.
Ongoing we have made with our very likeable and qualified guide an excursion in the impressively chaotic Old Dhaka. The real surprise, however, was that Dhaka unexpectedly molder appearing city is in which, apart from traffic and the thereby caused air pollution, you can move very pleasantly. We have pronounced the people as friendly and openly experienced without being meddlesome.
By the image problem of Bangladesh with western travelers and detains them from a visit, is in the capital a tourist one more attraction for the locals who have looked back by the dozen to us, can be taken a photo with us and wanted to talk from honest interest, without any ulterior motives (as often as in India) to palm it off anything on us or to hustle us in the next souvenir shop.
Bangladesh as a tourist Terra incognita seems now so attractive to us, that we consider coming again to explore next time the beauties of the nature.
Kind regards, Lars (in January, 2012)
